Licensing & obligations
Airfree Maps data derives from OpenStreetMap under the Open Database License (ODbL). You can build commercial products on it — you just have two obligations: attribution and share-alike.
1. Attribution (always)
Display © OpenStreetMap contributors wherever you show our maps, tiles or geocoded results. Our interactive maps do this for you; if you build your own interface you must show it. Full details on the attribution page.
2. Share-alike (for derivative databases)
If you extract and build a derivative database from the data (OpenStreetMap, OpenMapTiles schema), the ODbL requires you to make that database available under the ODbL too. This does not apply to ordinary produced works such as a rendered map image — those only need attribution.
Produced work vs derivative database
| What you do | Classed as | Your obligation |
|---|---|---|
| Show a rendered map or a static map image | Produced work | Attribution only |
| Use geocoding / routing results in your app | Produced work | Attribution only |
| Extract raw vector data to build/augment your own database | Derivative database | Attribution + share-alike (ODbL) |
Bulk download the base dataset (.mbtiles / .pmtiles) | Database | Share-alike gated — returns an ODbL notice unless terms are met |
Machine-readable licensing
The tile service exposes a machine-readable licensing document at /tiles/licensing, and tile responses carry attribution and licensing headers.
